OBSIDIAN RITUAL - dol ikara

the first in our AURAL SOLACE review series, featured in issue 14

Dol Ikara is a witch. Her shows so far have coincided with the days surrounding the full moon, thought that’s mostly coincidence. The result of years of tinkering and experimenting, Dol Ikara emerged from Claire Roddy’s bedroom aflame and screaming, like a phoenix: rising high, shaking off the ashes, always beginning anew. The ritualism inherent in the work shines through beautifully. Her music is haunting, a forlorn chronicle of creeping synth sections and deceptively powerful guitar lines that pair well with a voice that reverberates into the atmosphere.  I didn’t know I needed it until I heard her two singles (“Sparrow”, featured, and "White Queen", not featured), and now I’m all in. The void within me is howling alongside the girl I’ve known all these years. 

For those of you who vibe with situational listening, here’s your assignment: try “Stone Towers”, “Idyllic" and “Black Flower” for driving around with your windows down. For dancing in your bedroom, and singing to yourself in the mirror, go for “Residual”, “Sparrow”, and “Bon Road”. Get listening, and then get going!
